bfiedler
Any Iowa woodworkers have a hard time finding a lumber yard in Cedar Rapids or Des Moines that sells wood? I might have to explain my search history to my girlfriend....

Daniel Berg
Well CR doesn't have really much of anything. Des Moines does have the Woodsmith Store and its a nice selection. But Iowa City has a hardwood dealer I just don't remember their name.
Aaron Wells
I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I live in Des Moines and recommend you check out Liberty Hardwoods in Ankeny. Their prices and selection are very good.
bfiedler
I keep hearing rumors about a company in Iowa City, but have yet to actually find it. Have looked at the Woodsmith store... seems to be high prices to me. I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I live in Des Moines and recommend you check out Liberty Hardwoods in Ankeny. Their prices and selection are very good. Next time I am in DSM I will look at Liberty hardwoods!
woodbutcher74
Try Googling sawmills or sawyers. I live right across the river in Illinois and there are several small sawmills scattered around. They don't advertise and are usually are out in the middle of nowhere. Ask around, a rural mail carrier would be a good place to start.
WillieIV
Ditto on Liberty Hardwoods. They are where I buy almost all my material. Good knowledgeable sales people. They don't keep great hours for the hobbyist though. Closed on weekends...
Aaron Wells
I forgot about that Willie... Good point. They are only open till 5pm during the week as well which can make it difficult. Typically, they prefer you call ahead to make an order and selecting your materials is usually discouraged or not allowed. The plus side is you get the same price as those who buy in bulk which is usually half of what I pay at other stores. Your order is shrink wrapped and delivered via forklift to your car / truck. Can't beat that.
