Kevmc
I need to clean up the tenon cheeks on the front legs a bit. what is the best approach. I was going to use my low angle rabbit plane but am worrying about blow out in the ends of the tenon which would be really bad given its a through tenon. typically i would chamfer the ends to lessen the blow out but won't that impact the look of the tenon when it shows through? Do I just plane from each end towards the middle?
Boatworks Today
I typically do mine with a wide (sharp) chisel keeping the back flat on the piece so only the high spots are shaved off.. Chamfering the ends would only look odd if the tennon is flush with the outside mortise. If it protrudes a bit it might look cool providing the chamfer doesn't extend beyond where it pokes through.. thewoodwhisperer
I would plane in from each end, personally. Because that can sometimes be awkward, if you end up with a crown in the middle then switch to a wide chisel and chop toward the shoulder to flatten it out.
