wouldwurker
If you ever want spokeshave bliss, grab a piece of Hibiscus. It's like shaving paper mâché A quickie, but a fun one. My one year old likes to walk around with a stick in the yard, but he always seems to grab the sharpest most dangerous one he can find. I took a piece of hibiscus from last season's garden and took a spokeshave to about 50% of it. I left some 'bark' on it for contrast, otherwise it would look like an ivory tusk. It's insanely lightweight. Finish is just some Danish oil and ARS. Even with an oil base, it's very white. It likely won't last the summer before its destroyed, but he loves it...mainly for destroying the rest of the garden.
bgreenb
Very cool Vinny. I'm not familiar with hibiscus - is it associated with the flower? Stupid question?
wouldwurker
Not a stupid question. Yep it's the flower (and tea). It's a very fast growing perennial that regrows from the ground each year. Mine is Zone 7.

Immortan D
Neat idea. I guess there's no risk of sharp splinters.
Coop
Pretty darn cool Vinn. Was the pic of the flower taken last year?

wtnhighlander
Hmmmm...nice white "wood". Is it strong enough to use as inlay material?
wouldwurker
With 2 coats of ARS, I can't scratch it with my nail. I wouldn't use it as an outside binding though.
wtnhighlander
Cool, I was thinking more like a substitute for holly in a line & berry application. Fully embedded.
