Asked one of the guys what they did with it and he said "try to get rid of it." Awesome, let me help you! Filled my truck up with some big crotch pieces (and made "truck full of crotch" jokes to my wife all the way home*) Turned the smallest piece today - really cool figure in it (only the 6th bowl I've made, so still a few tool marks in the middle). Sanded up to ~400 grit and finished with BLO. This is my favorite thing about woodturning - you can find raw material, you don't have to buy it, and you can get to a finished product pretty quickly. *thankfully it's a short drive or she probably would have killed me. 5 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Most of the wood I picked up was cherry, not certain this piece was from the same tree, but the chips were definitely cherry colored and it smelled like cherry. But the finished piece doesn't really look all that cherry-ish to me.The one you turned is almost definitely white oak. There's no way it's cherry. That orange chunk does look like Osage orange to me. Although it's truly only native to a small geographical area in Texas and Oklahoma, it's been so profusely planted over the centuries that it can now be found in every state in the country.
