Osage Orange?

 

doubt it - this is in Connecticut - not a wood we see here.  Most of the wood I picked up was cherry, not certain this piece was from the same tree, but the chips were definitely cherry colored and it smelled like cherry.  But the finished piece doesn't really look all that cherry-ish to me.

The one you turned is almost definitely white oak.  There's no way it's cherry.  That orange chunk does look like Osage orange to me.  Although it's truly only native to a small geographical area in Texas and Oklahoma, it's been so profusely planted over the centuries that it can now be found in every state in the country.  It would be no surprise at all to find it in Connecticut.
