Dknapp34
I was shaping some wenge with a Nicholson rasp the other day and it just snapped in half. I know wenge is hard, but not that hard... Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with Nicholson rasps before. I know they're not the most expensive rasp out there, but they aren't dirt cheap either.
Barron
I have broken a file, but that was by using it as a pry bar. Assuming you are smarter than I am, I would suspect a flaw. But, its possible you were pressing down on both ends more than pushing in a straight line, creating a lot of stress in the middle of the rasp. They can be brittle. JerrySats
Never had that happen to any rasps or files I have . I would reach out to them and see whats up .Can you see any voids in the broken ends of the metal ?
Brendon_t
I find it hard to believe that someone could press down hard enough to snap it. There has got to be a forging flaw.
wtnhighlander
Had it been dropped on a concrete floor at some point prior?
Strasberry
Because they are so hard and brittle, if a file has been dropped it can take just light pressure to snap in half.
Dknapp34
I don't recall ever dropping it before it broke, but I suppose it's possible. I could have been pushing down on both ends a bit when it broke, but definitely not hard enough that it should have been broken. My guess is I just got a bad one. Dknapp34
Broken Nicholson is a great excuse to buy a new Auriou. I like that idea. I wonder if my wife would let me get a Sawstop PCS if my old TS happened to fall on the concrete and crack in half...by accident of course...
ponderingturtle
Look at the fracture joint. It should be pretty clear if there was a flaw in the metal of a bubble or such. Of course all those teeth will be acting as stress risers and good files and such are not exactly intended to be impact resistant. And it is possible it was dropped before you got it.
