Bombarde16 Posted December 11, 2010 Report Posted December 11, 2010 D'oh! Any silver bullets out there that would remove a toddler's crayoning from a shellac finish? Quote
Beechwood Chip Posted December 11, 2010 Report Posted December 11, 2010 crayon is just wax - what removes wax from shellac? Quote
Bombarde16 Posted December 11, 2010 Author Report Posted December 11, 2010 what removes wax from shellac? Gravity. I'm sure there's some chemical witchcraft that commercial shellac manufacturers use to speed things up (or maybe a centrifuge) but in a nutshell, you dissolve natural shellac flakes and wait for wax settle to the bottom. Shellac's natural affinity for wax makes me wonder if I'm in the market for scrubbing the finish off this piece (locally) with alcohol and starting over. Quote

Rob, since it doesn't cost much have you thought about giving Mr. Clean’s Magic Erasure a try? It’s supposed to get crayon marks off of walls. Looks like a sponge, but I'm not sure if it would work with shellac though. It’s used dry, and you can buy it in most grocery stores. Has two side, but use the white side. Quote
iSawitFirst Posted December 11, 2010 Report Posted December 11, 2010 Great suggestion. Another possibility is Formlal 409. Its less abrasive than the Magic Eraser. Quote

You know I thought of 409 but I wasn't sure if the ingredients in 409 would behave well with shellac, and even after going to the MSDS on it, I'm still not sure. Quote
bywc Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Make a test piece on some scrap then put crayon on it and go to town testing things until one works the way you want it to better than using the real thing as a "fingers crossed" thing. Quote
AceHoleInOne Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Wow...that is tough...I have tried with luck in the past using one of those Tide stain remover pens. But with shellac sometimes I have ghosting of the Crayon in the surface. Works great on lacquer and water-based finishes. Lots of info if you do a Google search...but if you find something please let us know. -Ace- Quote
AceHoleInOne Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 Goo Gone is also excellent, just tried it. It appears that Goo Gone is/contains Naphtha....just tried some Naphtha (charcoal lighter fluid) worked great. -Ace- Quote
ztifpatrick Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 D'oh! Any silver bullets out there that would remove a toddler's crayoning from a shellac finish? Why not mineral spirits (paint thinner)? It will dissovle wax but won't hurt the shellac finish. Quote
alindsey Posted December 13, 2010 Report Posted December 13, 2010 No idea how the shellac would react to it, but for some reason baby/diaper wipes seem to clean up darned near anything. Did the trick when my, at the time, 2 year old decided to color the keys of my piano green and orange. Quote

Rob, after reading through all of the suggestions, which one did you finally go with? If none of the above, then what did you do to remove the crayon marks from the shellac finish? Thanks Rob. Quote
