Just Bob
One of my sons wanted an awl for his birthday. He didn't specify what kind, so I made a scratch and a birdcage awl. Gave me a chance to play with the lathe and avoid some honey do's for a day. The scratch awl is purple heart, birdcage is claro walnut. Copper pipe ferrules, (nothing but best for my kids). The sharp pointy things are ground and hardened O1 drill rod. First time I have used a birdcage awl, really like it, gonna have to make one for me.
Coop
Pretty cool Bob! Well done! The birdcage awl (never heard of one) is used for stuff like working with leather?

They where made in the late 1800's for drilling holes in bamboo for...birdcages. But they can be used for drilling holes in thin stock with out splitting, starting a screw etc... (I can verify this it, works). 1 hour ago, TIODS said: Those are awesome! I need to do one for my shop! Well I had to order 15' of drill stock to get 11", somehow that doesn't sound right. So pick it up on your way home, or let me deliver so I can see your bench. Thanks Bob

I had no idea it was true though!
