Tom Cancelleri
Yes I'm breaking my rule of no painting wood. However I am working on a commission that needs to be satin black. Any recommendations for a paint and a primer to use on ply? I will be spraying it with my Fuji MM4
AceHoleInOne
General Finishes Black Milk Paint.....is satin. They only offer Milk Paints as a satin finish. -Ace-
BonPacific
I haven't sprayed it, but KILZ PVA is a fantastic primer for painting wood. I've used it on OSB and Plywood a few times. I don't think it comes in black though.
wdwerker
Black tint in a satin clear finish works great. It takes a few coats to get a solid black. Just depends on your supplier being able to tint .

If it's going on plywood should I worry about filling and prepping the surface insanely smooth prior to finishing, or with a clear tinted finish, would it just make more sense to finish the finish and wet sand it with some 2000 abralon pads
wdwerker
Satin is a little more forgiving but black shows any ripple or dimple in the surface, especially if it's viewed in a raking light. Don't get obsessive but prep is easier than building and sanding multiple coats.
wtnhighlander
Go back and look at@vinnyjojo 's console table / giant black staple. I know it was MDF, but he got a super-slick black finish in it.
AceHoleInOne
The question I have, define for us plywood? Nasty knotty crap plywood? Since your painting. I would prep the wood with a good water based grain/wood filler and sand smooth then paint. -Ace-

Jer32383
If you aren't using automotive paint advanced alkyd Benjamin Moore is great stuff. It's what painter spray cabinets with. Dries hard and flows well. Extended work times. It's basically modern oil. I just used an automotive primer that comes in cans and was fantastic. I'll go find the can if you would like. Otherwise I use aqua lock primer for it's great adhesion and I just recently sprayed type 75 primer from Home Cheapo. That was pretty flat.
