Woodenskye
How high do you go when it comes to grit when flattening the back of a plane blade? I am currently at 320 which is the grit of my course diamond stone. I also have about a consistent scratch pattern up to 1/4" from the edge. If it is best to go to my 1000, 4000, 8000 waterstones I'm ok with that. The bevel I plan on doing to 8000.
Popular Post drzaius
My finest stone is 8000 or 10000 & that's what I go to. The finish on the back is as important as the bevel.
Popular Post BonPacific
Whatever a strop and green compound is. I see no reason to sharpen the back any less than you're sharpening the bevel.
pkinneb
I go to 16K on a Shapton stone but that's because I like the looks of highly polished backs functionally 8K would be plenty.
Woodenskye
Thanks guys, the jury has spoken, 8000 it is.
Tom King
The cutting edge is an intersection of the bevel with the back. The back, at least close to the edge, needs to be finished to a level to match the bevel. That's why the "ruler trick" works. I just do up to about an inch, and am done with it for good. If you raise a burr when sharpening, only use your finest stone to get it off, or you will have to go through a progression to get it back.
Woodenskye
I ended up going all the way through 8000 on the back and bevel. We will see how it cuts.
Jfitz
I also do 8000 on both back and bevel.
