Popular Post Mark J
I was having trouble seeing inside a small deep bowl I was turning. It's like working in a cavern. I tried holding a flashlight with the turning tool. That sort of worked, but not really--OK it didn't work. Then I had the idea to strap/clamp a headlamp to the tail stock which I wasn't using and voila a lighted cavern. Worked well. Got the bowl done. By the way that is not how I hold the tool. I'm just demonstrating the approach with one hand while shooting the picture with the other.

Mark J
Actually I'm LOL. It never dawned on me to just go fetch a desk lamp. Well that would have been two flights to the second floor. The headlamp was right at hand.
Marmotjr
I have enough LED's and magnets and small batteries in my electronics lab, I might have to fashion something that clamps to the tool itself. It wouldn't need to be a spotlight, just something to light up the inside. Of course, it's usually not light that's the issue, it's the debris that piles up in there, especially with a hollow form where the lip of the bowl is uphill.

This works for debris

JANSJÖ LED work lamp, black - 24 " - IKEAhttp://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/20169658/ And there's one with a clip base. JANSJÖ LED wall/clamp spotlight, black - - - IKEAhttp://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/20315674/ Next time I'm at the Ikea I'll have to splurge for a couple.

I have four or five IKEA desk lamps strewn around the shop. Best bang-for-your-buck task lighting around. I use the old school drafting type, with a 3/8th inch stem, so I just drilled holes in all my work surfaces so they mount or unmount easily. wdwerker
I've got about a dozen of those IKEA desk lamps with LED floodlight & spotlight bulbs in them. Had to replace springs to handle the early LED bulbs heavy heat sinks. I usually have to turn several either off or in a different direction when taking pictures in the shop. It would Luckily I had a few bottles left over from another project and used them for woodworking (I don't like to use them on computer components). I use a shop vac now.
