Johns3b
Hello all I got this tool (I use it as a scraper) a while ago for free in a bucket of old tools someone was throwing away. I believe it is some kind of scraper and works great, but I also need to figure out how to sharpen it. I have tried to sharpen it the same as a card scraper but no luck. Here are some attached pictures and help is greatly appreciated thank you john
Tpt life
No clue, but the anvil look of the back side makes me think a splitting aid for something like wood shingles.
Isaac
Looks like some sort of antique spokeshave to me.
Johns3b
I think so too, as it is very good at scraping and makes nice shavings while leaving a smooth surface.
JohnDi
No clue either, but I'm inclined to agree withTpt as it looks like the side opposite to the sharpened edge has been struck with a hammer during its life.
Tpt life
The lack of a sole leaves me thinking either rough work (splitting like I thought earlier) or soft work (hide scraping.) Just two more cents on reflection.

wdwerker
I can picture it being used 2 handed on a hide stretched vertically. No exact experience with one but it seems plausible.
Coop
OP, is there a clue that makes you think that this has anything to do with woodworking? Was the original owner a woodworker?
gmercer_48083
It is a Japanese scraper

gmercer_48083
The tool is a variation of a "Japanese Yari Kanna". Possibly from somewhere in Asia.
