LelandWalker
I started to make a little wood pipe out of a piece of spalted maple thinking I could sanitize it with vinegar, and seal/finish it with beeswax or something similar, but upon further research I'm not so sure because I can't find much on the topic. There are a bunch of spalted wood pipes being sold on etsy, that would make me think that they're safe to smoke out of, but I'm not sure that I should assume it's safe just because other people are selling them. Any insight would be highly appreciated.
wtnhighlander
I'm fairly certain the carcinogenic nature of tobacco smoke overshadows any danger from the possible exposure to the spalting fungus. If you are making the stem from a non-spalted material, I'm going to say that is about as safe as its going to get. Please note, this is just my opinion, informed only by generally available knowledge. I am no expert on the matter. Mark J
You'll have to do a little googling, but Dr. Seri Robinson is a noted expert on spalting.
