BillyJack
How do I maintain it. I asked this question on another forum and thought it was funny woodworking stops with finishing. Now that it's done what are you using to maintain it?
Tpt life
That all depends on the finish for me. I can flood some poly pieces with some water, but would not do that with a shellac piece. In fact, I am more basing any approach on the actual cause. What needs maintenance? That determines how I answer.
BillyJack
Most are trying to get to the finish line, but don't know how to care for it after its done. Most that are finishers know what's in finishes and what shouldn't be used. Nobody talks about after care maintenance. I generally use pre-cats on many pieces but Poly on pieces that can get scratched and will need maintenance.
Tpt life
So, you don’t have a question, but are challenging us to think beyond the finish room?
BillyJack
Yep...Most don't know beyond the finish.. When I was a kid in Chicago my mom cleaned everything with pine sol and water and waxed with pledge. Cheap or not it got the same treatment.
BillyJack
We talk about testing finishes to find out what they are. Now that that's been figured out, how will one maintain it. When you buy an antique car at an auction with a nice paint job, do you just throw wax and pray or do you try and find out the best way to maintain this antique restoration? Details my dear Watson, details...
wtnhighlander
@BillyJack, can you share a little about pre-cat finishes, for those of us who have never done this commercially? Are they accessible to the us hobbyists?
gee-dub
I favored Guardsman for many years. They changed their formulation and I am glad I have a reasonable supply of the old stuff. For shellacked surfaces I use a quality paste wax. For poly and hard varnish surfaces I use the older Guardsman. I have not really seen a definitive replacement in the forums that cover such things; museums, archivists, etc.
BillyJack
I get it at S&W for &39 a gallon. Bad it's hard, good it dries fast and is water resistant.... My wife gets a discount on Guardsman at work. I use it regular...
