Popular Post Immortan D
The box has room for the original cutters with plenty of empty space for more. I made the grooves for the spacers using the #55 and a piece of wood as the fence, which was attached to the work piece using pin nails. Each groove was indexed from the previous one using the cutters themselves. That resulted in perfect spacing between the grooves. The lid was carved using the same tool. I then used my LN side rabbet planes to remove extra material from the sides. The sides of the box were resawed with my Japanese saws.

Immortan D
Been moving things around but there's no way I can fit the 55 in my tool chest. I will have to make a box for it.
Chestnut
Wow that's an awesome box. The wood you made it out of has some intresting grain do you know what kind it was?

Unfortunately I don't remember the name. It's very prone to tear out and the end grain is just awful.
Chestnut
Paulownia maybe?

I looked it up on the wood database and Kiri is an alternate name for that wood. And now I remember the lumber yard guy using that name for it.

Maybe it was just my board, but that thing is so soft you can scratch it with your nails without much force. I bought it for a frame but ended up using it in shop projects only. It feels like balsa good or something like that.
Chestnut
Yeah it's supposed to be very soft. The tree apparently grows to 60 foot tall and a 18" trunk in less than 10 years when in full sun.
wtnhighlander
I have 1 stick of poulonia that was tossed in with a load of other lumber as a sample. Extremely light, but seems pretty rigid. I imagine it will dent easily, but has a pronounced ring structure like oak or SYP. Looking forward to using it in .... something.

Popular Post Immortan D
I made a box for the plane and the cutters also fit in there. Still have to work on some details and on the finish when I have the time.

I used scrap materials and didn't take the time to properly dimension that wood to about 1/2" or even less. On the bright side, I can step on that box
