bradleyheathhays
I just got a small 12V fuel transfer pump from Amazon and am wondering if it can run off the cigarette lighter plug in the dash. I'm doubting it as the plate says it draws 6 amps and the pump is wired with post clamps to be hooked directly to the battery. What would happen if I traded the clamps for a male 12v cig adapter, plugged it into the dash and used it to transfer fuel?
JohnG
I think most cig lighters are on 10-15amp fuses so you might be fine. Though it’s been a while since I’ve plugged anything into a cigarette lighter. 1
Tom King
I run marine batteries (plenty of choices around here) in the tractors mainly because they have the extra terminals for hooking such stuff up. I have sae plugs for the fuel transfer pump. There are plenty of choices on Amazon. It's worked 100% of the times with no worries using them since changing to this system. https://www.amazon.com/SPARKING-Terminal-Harness-Disconnect-Assembly/dp/B074BS8B14/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3OI6G3CWO9JTW&keywords=sae+plug+with+in+line+fuse+12+gauge&qid=1690542055&sprefix=sae+plug+with+fuse%2Caps%2C93&sr=8-3
Tpt life
Use quick disconnects and put alligator battery terminal clamps if it outdraws the power port. The quick disconnect is my preferred as I can go back and forth depending on situation.
Mark J
The amp rating of cigarette lighters varies from car to car. You can probably find the info in your owners manual or you can find the fuse.
Tom King
I also keep these on the machine screw terminals on the tractor batteries. https://www.amazon.com/NOCO-GC008-Eyelet-Terminal-Connector/dp/B004LWWNLC/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1YGHC3QROF160&keywords=noco+genius+pigtail&qid=1690560080&sprefix=noco+pigtail%2Caps%2C103&sr=8-3

This made me chuckle I was thinking the same thing. I'm not even sure my truck has one...it has 110 and a 220 in the bed but I don't recall a cigarette lighter or socket for one.
