Popular Post Askland09 Posted March 21, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted March 21, 2024 Been really into turning pens lately and these three are probably my favorite ones yet. African Blackwood, Bolivian Rosewood, and Goncalo Alves wood species. Kits from PSI, magnetic graduate kits. Good way to spend a few hours on a day off. Cheers! Luke 7 1 Quote
fcschoenthal Posted March 21, 2024 Report Posted March 21, 2024 Luke, you sure don't pick the easy woods to turn. They look great. I haven't tried that magnetic kit, but I like the shape that yours turned out. I've never fancied the ones with big, bulbous hourglass shapes. 1 Quote

They were on my list tackle and weren't too terrible to control. Few trips to and from the sharpening station is what seemed.to do the trick. 1 Quote
JohnG Posted March 21, 2024 Report Posted March 21, 2024 What is magnetic about them? I haven’t seen those kits. I got a PSI catalog a few days ago but haven’t taken a look at it yet. Quote
Popular Post Gary Beasley Posted March 21, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted March 21, 2024 This type of kit the cap is magnetic, pop it off and stick it to the other end. Dont have to worry about some ham handed person breaking the threads yanking the cap off without unscrewing it. 3 1 Quote
Barron Posted April 13, 2024 Report Posted April 13, 2024 Looks great. I love making pens, the hard part is finding a reason after you have given every one you know. They do make good tips (in addition to cash) for guides and special service when traveling. 1 Quote
Mark J Posted April 13, 2024 Report Posted April 13, 2024 @Barron, look into "Pens For Troops". Many of our club members are also into pens and the group makes regular contributions. 1 Quote
BillyJack Posted July 27, 2024 Report Posted July 27, 2024 I can’t never seem to get anyone to price a pen/pencil out to me.. Quote
JohnG Posted July 27, 2024 Report Posted July 27, 2024 Why do you need someone to price it out for you? Plenty people selling them online to see what they are selling for. As for cost, the kits can be found at about any woodworking supply shop, as can wood/resin blanks. The only other component is time and consumables. 1 Quote

Gary Beasley Posted August 5, 2024 Report Posted August 5, 2024 Are you looking to have a specific pen made with special materials? Quite a few makers will take on requests like that if its close to the types they make. Quote
Mark J Posted August 5, 2024 Report Posted August 5, 2024 Rockler and Penn State Industries both sell deer antler pen blanks, so you just need to find a woodturner near you that does pens. I've seen some pens turned from antler. The antler is much larger in diameter than a pen, but this gets turned down to a normal pen diameter and configuration. Try reaching out to these folks. https://kcwoodturners.org/ Quote
