Beechwood Chip Posted January 10 Report Posted January 10 A friend was using Devcon 5 minute epoxy in the double syringe for a project. She mixed it thoroughly and it's been in my room temperature basement the whole time. The package says it cures in one hour, but it's been two days and it's still soft and sticky. Any ideas on what could have caused that? 1 Quote
Tom King Posted January 10 Report Posted January 10 Warm it up and see if it kicks. It's probably been too cold for it down there. 1 Quote
fcschoenthal Posted January 10 Report Posted January 10 I've also had those double syringes not dispense equal amounts. Sounds like not enough hardener in the mix might be another scenario. She might have to just try and scrape it off and try again. 2 Quote
wtnhighlander Posted January 10 Report Posted January 10 Using as adhesive, or a filler? I've had various epoxies fail to harden when used as 'inlay', with inappropriate colorants or additives mixed in. Quote

Gluing a mirror to some PVC pipe cut in half, so the mirror is resting on two strips of PVC. The cuts weren't perfect, so there are some small gaps. The mirror seems to be perfectly secure. I think the mix was short on hardener, so the epoxy that cured is fine but there's some uncured resin mixed in. This is a jury rig for a medical research experiment. 1 Quote
Mark J Posted January 11 Report Posted January 11 Check me on this, but I vaguely recall that vinegar will clean off epoxy. 2 Quote

Mark J Posted January 24 Report Posted January 24 @Beechwood Chip, I'm curious what your friend did with this problem? Quote

Wiped off the gooey stuff and covered it with painter's tape. This was a prototype, and I'll offer her some West System epoxy for the final. But this works well enough. I told her about using vinegar but she had already moved on. A few days ago I was replacing the pump on my west system resin can and dripped some resin on my bench and floor. But I remembered the vinegar trick, and that cleaned it right up! 4 Quote
