wouldwurker
Warning - By reading this you certify that you are 18 and can legally view wood porn. Pulled this piece of flame birch out of my lumber rack It'll be a walnut and birch box, about 16" by 7". Using a dovetail jig (unless things go horribly wrong...then it'll be mitred and key'ed. It will hold these two removable coffee ground receptacles.
wtnhighlander
Another coffee shop accessory? I hope the end users respect your work to care for it properly! It would be awful to see those wonderful pieces all stained and moldy from wet coffee grounds!
wouldwurker
This one is going to be subject to constant abuse. Might just coat the whole thing in boat epoxy
wouldwurker
Not too bad with the test poplar

Might just coat the whole thing in boat epoxy Then why ooh why would you use that flame birch? Grab some hard maple and one of those sparkle gel pens, maybe it'll fool em.

wouldwurker
First time using this Hart Design Dovetail Jig. Ok, I guess. I'm not a fan of symmetrical pins/tails.

Brendon_t
Those look damn exquisite
wtnhighlander
Vinny, that joint is perfectly beautiful, but I have to agree that too much regularity in a long row of dovetails isn't all that exciting. It's only a little better with through tails vs. half-blinds.
wouldwurker
Hey hey. They all fit!
davewyo
It's coming along nicely. Won't be long and there will be coffee grounds all over that thing. BTW the Flame Birch is incredible. I got 30 BF and none of it looks that good.

wouldwurker
A Forstner bit, a little bit of routing, a LOT of chisel work, and way too much card scraping...and it's not even that cool. All because I didn't account for the fact that the metal box was tapered and had a bulge on both sides. I could've made five more boxes in the time it took me to come up with a solution and execute it. :
wouldwurker
If I can find 4 magnets around here, I'll put em in those Forstner tiny middle holes...otherwise I'll flush trim a small walnut dowel in there
wtnhighlander
Hey, the solution worked! Anytime you don't have to start over is a win. Is there enough ferrous material in those stainless buckets to attract a magnet?
wouldwurker
Actually no...not magnetic at all. I'll drill it out a little In the middle and flush a walnut miller dowel end in there. Sanded the inside last night. Between my jointer, planer, and hand planes, I got some crazy tearout in the figured birch. Divots here and there that can't really be sanded out. Any ideas on how to best improve would be appreciated...my solution now is to just leave it alone. EDIT: Found my answer - Leave it alone, buy that supermax drum sander, and use it NEXT TIME.
wouldwurker
Forstner holes filled with Walnut miller dowels and flush trimmed. Routing detail cleaned up.
wouldwurker
Decided on no bottom given all the wet stuff and cleaning issues. Added a middle brace - little bit of extra measuring to get it seated on that rabbet and still have the dominos aligned. Just needs a little handle of sorts for the top. Thinking a drawer pull maybe? Glue up, sand, and it's finishing time. EDIT: Screw the handle.
Brendon_t
Definitely screw the handles. Looks great as is. Don't make it any easier for someone to pick it up and walk off with it.
wouldwurker
Update. Sanded down to 220 this morning around 4:30am. Had a nice flat bottom, and now it's a bit wonky post sanding. Wish I had a 16" disc sander about now to flatten that sucker out. Finishing time tonight.
wouldwurker
I will never again covet a beautiful board to collect dust on my lumber rack. I'm sorry I cheated on you, Arm R Seal...it feels so good to have you back in my arms again. That Watco was a one night stand the other day...she didn't mean anything to me baby! Take me back. Just the first coat. Love me some ARS

wtnhighlander
Awesome! Don't forget to bring us back to earth with a shot of it in 6 weeks, covered in coffee ground filth.
wouldwurker
Should stay clean - it's not just topless, it's bottomless too. (that's your cue, Steve)
