rodger.
Even though I have a zillion things on my "to build" list, I really would like to try making a wooden hand plane. I was considering this book. Does anyone know if it's any good, or can suggest an alternative? http://www.leevalley.com/en/Wood/page.aspx?p=52680&cat=1,46096,46107&ap=

Llama
I know you asked for a book, but... There are a couple of videos on the Lie-Nielsen website. They are on my list to buy.
baok
That book (David Finck's) is fantastic. I made a plane last year by following his step by step descriptions. That's definitely the one to read.

baok
I can't remember - I just bought one from David's website (came with a chip breaker). I'm pretty sure I remember a detailed section on making your own. I read so much that things get intermingled in my head.
mlingenfelter
For that style of plane, I think David's book is the best. I've made a couple planes like this and love the planes. David also has companion DVDs that go into a lot of detail, that is in the book. The book and DVDs work well together. Mike
calblacksmith
If you buy the DVD and the book at the same time, he will sign the book. The book is a compliment to the DVD and the other way around too. Sometimes you need to see something to understand while reading in detail has value too. I bought the set and it is a very big thumbs up on the pair if you are interested in making a wooden plane.
