Paint

Regular paint is usually not hard enough for furniture surfaces like tabletops , chair arms etc. The best finishes for furniture come in solvent and water bourne versions. General Finishes has a good line of water bourne products. Lacquers are quite flammable and may not be appropriate for home use. Shellac can be sprayed but it's not always the best top coat, but it's often used as a base coat or barrier coat under incompatible finishes.
