MarkR
OK new here so Hi everyone, I'm having a few doubts on this fire surround I'm making for a client. They have OK'd what I've done so far, but I think the top looks a bit bulky. I can reduce it by leaving out part of the moulding. Here's with the moulding in. And without... Whatcha think? The Corbels are having some kind of detail put in(I haven't decided yet), that's why they look a bit bland at the moment. Thanks in advance. Beechwood Chip
I think the thinner top looks insubstantial supported by those huge corbels. If you are going to reduce the top, I'd reduce the corbels as well.

MarkR
Hmmm it would be difficult to change the corbels, as there are other factors to take into consideration. I will finish it with all the other detailing, and post then. It's easy to do a comparison, as the top and sub top are of course separate. You have got me thinking the corbels are too big now , When I get in the shop tomorrow, I will take another look to see if they can be reduced a bit. Thanks for your thoughts, I work on my own, so it's nice to bounce ideas off other people.
MarkR
Ask the client. S/he's the only one whose opinion matters. -- Russ That of course is true, but it's nice if, when it leaves the shop I'm happy with it too.
Vic
It really depends on how grand/large the space is. I agree with Beechwood that the moulding in place is a better fit when just considering the piece itself.
MarkR
OK all finished, except for polishing. I'm quite happy with it now that all the mouldings, and detailing is done. What do you guys think? Thanks for looking guys.
Beechwood Chip
I like it! The only thing I'd change is the horizontal groove between the corbel and the post. A lot of the classical style comes from architecture, so I always picture water running down the piece. The water should either drip off an edge (like the dentile molding), or flow smoothly down the piece. I don't know if that's a good rule of thumb, or if it's just me. MarkR
Yes you are right, it needs something in that intersection, that's an easy fix too cheers. I'm thinking a bead that's just wider than the corbel.
Beechwood Chip
Just tossing out ideas: what if you rounded over the top and bottom of the groove, and popped a bead with the same radius into the groove, so you ended up with three horizontal beads (1/2 bead, full bead, 1/2 bead). Rounding over the top edge of the horizontal groove would soften the intersection between the vertical grooves and the horizontal groove. CJC5151
I like the detail of the surround. I do think something looks alittle off. This may sound odd, but if you have the room, I think I would have made the top alittle wider and alittle further out from the wall. I think it would balance the size of the corbals better. JayWC
Definite improvements and progress from the start to the finish. I agree that the corbel base needs something as shown, but beautiful execution of the workmanship.
capnjack2
I like the final iteration except I see more shadow lines in the area of the corbels and above. However, I think that is absent from the rest of the piece. I agree with Beechwood and maybe it could take place down near the plinths, etc. Jack
noumenon
First off great execution! I wish we had a picture of the fireplace that it's going in front of, because the scale would depend on the size of it. I agree with the points CJC5151 and capnjack2 brought up. If the top was deeper, wider, and cantilevered over the corbels a few inches it would balance much better with the lower section. I do notice more shadow lines on the upper 1/3 of the piece since you added the dental molding detail and the grooves to the corbels. But this is being pretty picky and after finish is applied and sitting in front of a hefty fireplace I think it will look great.
MarkR
OK guys all finished, there was a two week delay on the woodburner. The clients loved it as is, so I didn't change it in the end. Thanks for the input, even though I went with my gut, and thanks for looking. Stampy
Nicely done Mark. Looks great. Incidently I'm curious to see what your shop looks like. I saw the stone wall and arched winow in the background of the pictures. You should post some shots of it in the Shop section. MarkR
Thanks guys, I'm thinking of incorporating the golden madrone veneer that's on the panels, into my own kitchen doors. I'd never heard of it before this project, and I really like it.
