Dapettit6
At my job in the oilfield I pick up these wood beams that pipeliners use when setting pipe in the ground. Most of them are oak but sometimes I come across some mystery trees. I live and work out in the desert of West Texas and New Mexico so I doubt its a native tree since we have no trees out here. Any idea what kind of wood this is? I ran it through the planer and splashed some mineral spirits on it to reveal the grain.
Popular Post Chestnut
I have some donnage that looks just like that. My guess is sycamore. Clean up the face that would be the quarter sawn face and if you get a lot of heavy ray fleck like is typical for sycamore that'd be a good indicator. It'd be the right side in your 2nd picture. 1

Dapettit6
No pungent smell that I can tell, but it has been sitting out in the desert sun all summer long. Also scored some nice oak from this same pile.

Dapettit6
Not sure yet, My mom has requested a pair of end tables for her new couch and I’ll probably use this or the oak I have for that.

James Bailey
sycamore. The quartersawn picture reveals it as such. I have a small lumber yard on a farm I own and we have quartersawed a small amount of sycamore.
