Popular Post PPBart
About 20 yrs ago after my parents were dead we had to clean out their house. In a cluttered store room, under a pile of junk, I found an odd (at least, to me) treadle-style sewing machine base. At first I though it was broken or incomplete, but a bit of research into the White Sewing Machine Company showed otherwise. I couldn't think of a good use for it at the time, so it went into my storage room to collect dust for another couple of decades. I recently decided that I needed a nicer TV stand for my home office, and that White machine stand came to mind. I played with the design for a while, first thinking I would try to match the ornate curves of the base, but that just didn't look right.. Finally I decided to keep it simple and emphasis the difference in style. The base is only 14.5" tall, with the flywheel extending further up another ~6". Here, the cabinet is 10" high, build with 1/2" baltic birch plywood with poplar trim in the edges. The drawers are also just 1/2" baltic birch boxes with poplar fronts (the right two drawers are false fronts held in place with magnetic latches to enclose the cavity for the flywheel). I'm not totally pleased with the color choices, but my wife painted it (happy wife = happy life). The cabinet just sits atop the base, so if I decide later to redo it will be pretty simple... Right now, I just think I need a larger TV!
wtnhighlander
That treadle base seems like an early vintage, judging by the heft & style. Nice job on the casework, that looks good!
Popular Post drzaius
Great result. Now here's what you need to do. Mount a generator in the cabinet & connect it to the treadle & use it to power the TV. A real old school meets new school 1
Ronn W
I once had a treadle sewing machine base and a cast iron floor grate from a gravity air system. ADd a round piece of glass and or voila voilaa presto. Table for the porch.
