Mark J
I have heard that North American bandsaw wheels are crowned while European wheels are not. If that's true, what are the relative merits?
gee-dub
I'm sure there will be a lot of opinions on this as we get on most bandsaw threads ;-) Smaller blades tend to track better on crowned tires. Once a larger blade size is expected as the norm I think flat tires show up.
Chestnut
I find that the crowned wheels have concentrated force on parts of the band saw blade and depending on the blade installed can cause premature failure. I've changed how I tune my band saw with carbide tipped blades. I went from breaking a blade in 9 months to not having broken one in a year and a half now. With flat wheels i don't think this issue would occur.
Tom King
My 24" Centauro has flat wheels. It works great with 1" blades. The teeth hang off the front edge of the wheels. All the smaller ones have crowned wheels, and the blades are run mostly centered on the wheels. I don't think it's worth a lot of time even thinking about which is better. I would imagine narrow blades would shorten the life of flat tires, but don't know. I don't worry about it. I run them like they were intended.
