Kevorobtz
Hi, We have some leftover lumber that has been stained with Cabot's solid stain - oil based. Can I paint over that w/ latex paint or do I need a primer first, or is it even possible? The stain has been on for a little over a year now. Thanks! BillyJack
Contact the manufacturer.. Gotta watch the guesses.. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ispot.tv%2Fad%2F1wfA%2F4imprint-parachute&psig=AOvVaw0-ptWwvPxt8fgYltfe-8e9&ust=1692804411176000&source=images&cd=vfe&opi=89978449&ved=0CA8QjhxqFwoTCMDRnoHK8IADFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD
Ronn W
I agree - contact manufacturer. Also ask them if a coat of shellac over the stain would work. I would be tempted to try that on a scrap piece.
wtnhighlander
Agreewith both of the above, and suspect a primer will be recommended.

jbmektx
A year is not long enough. Exposed to the elements / outdoors 3+ years or beyond stated warranty -- usually 3 years horiz -- 5 years vert. a top quality latex primer will most likely work. Gotta prime anyway -- use Zinnser Cover Stain oil based primer. Lower cost that shellac and better surface build up. https://paintsgeek.com/can-you-put-latex-stain-over-oil-stain/
