Tom King
I would have liked it better if the sharpening had not been done by hand. I'd like to try an 01 iron that I had sharpened. I've tried the other steels, and I still like 01 the best. If 01 is only sharpened to the sharpest point that you can get A2, then it will of course not take as many shavings. Get the 01 as sharp as possible, and it will take a lot more shavings before it gets down to the same starting sharpness point as the A2. I get way more than 140 shavings with a plane with 01 iron, but I've never just pushed it from the back. Also, I see no useful purpose in a back bevel. I keep everything flat now. I do really appreciate the work to find the best clearance angle though, but for what I'm doing, I can plane for 15 minutes before I need to hone the edge on the higher grit stones, and by then, I need a little break anyway. derekcohen
This has been debated to death on Sawmill Creek (thread is still running). The author of the article came up with some innovative testing, however his conclusions were way off (not backed up by any data). Ignore the conclusions. Unknown craftsman
I just looked at the test and it pretty much matches what I have experienced. My edges lasts longer in dougfir then hard maple. Cherry is very forgiving. A2 steel is better then 01 or old stanley blades. Aj
