Eric.
Can't wait! I'm in a slump right now and could use a kick. Did you decide for sure that you're doing both a turned and a sculpted version? I'm lathe-less. I bet your turned version will be walnut and the sculpted one mahogany. Right? Am I right? LOL
TerryMcK
Just renewed again The lathe is waiting and whole big 5" square x 55" long chunk of sapele is just ready to be turned.

dodgeram99
Will other be a alternative way to make it with out a laith?
thewoodwhisperer
Not if you want to make the turned version. But I will most likely try to play with non-lathe alternatives. Just not sure on that yet since it falls into the "alternative" category, which is something I usually make decisions on at the last minute. jmaichel
Just picked up a Louisville Slugger for the table build, definitely made out of Ash. The more and more I think about using a bat the more I like it. I am a huge baseball fan and I think I am going to use the entire bat in this build, make the table close to pub height and add some design elements to the top featuring the Chicago Cubs logos. This will be perfect for my many cave and go well with my Cubs Kegerator!

This will be perfect for my many cave and go well with my Cubs Kegerator! I was thinking exactly the same thing as I can only get ash, maple or hickory bats. I was going to turn it from a hunk of sapele I've got but I was saving that for a bass guitar build. I really like the shape of the "baseball bat" column in the plans and noticed that the slugger had a pleasing shape that will probably suit this build really well. Ash it is but I'm going to do a different shaped top (not round and not square/rectangular). Just don't order any aluminum bats by mistake people
AMarshall
I was going to turn it from a hunk of sapele I've got but I was saving that for a bass guitar build. I'm glad that large blank of sapele was saved for another day. It's hard to tell from the plans, but this is a little table and only about 29" tall. We did play with some other tops, but kept coming back to the simple oval.
dvoigt
WoodCraft has a figured maple baseball bat blanks on sale: http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2000688/42510/Maple-Figured-Trophy-Baseball-Bat-Billet.aspx A great option if you are going to go the maple route! jmaichel
Any word yet on Bell Forest kits?
thewoodwhisperer
They are working on them. I'll have more info this week.
Wayniackc
I am pretty good at asking stupid questions, so I figured I would throw this one out there. Why does the top tilt? So you can scoot it closer to the wall?
thewoodwhisperer
Exactly.
Popular Post krtwood
1) You can store it close to the wall. 2) It doesn't get as dusty when it's stored vertically. 3) Portable dart board. 4) If you're hanging around the house in your birthday suit and someone walks in you can hide behind it. They'll be so impressed with your craftsmanship you can just carry on a conversation as if everything is perfectly normal. 5) When SWMBO puts a todo list on it, a tragic locking pin malfunction may cause the list to fall under the couch before you even notice it's there. Of course you'll need to investigate the mysterious cause of this in the shop. Really, you can't afford not to have a tilt top table.
mikem
Question for clarification, when you say "By May 3rd" do you mean before May 3rd or on May 3rd? This could be a fact for those who need to wait till pay day to sign-up/renew.

EvilNuff
I am also very interested in lathe-less options for this build. I am hoping Marc that you do have the time to explore some "alternate" options.
jmaichel
I am also very interested in lathe-less options for this build. I am hoping Marc that you do have the time to explore some "alternate" options. I am going with the Louisville Slugger option on one table. I did buy two bell forest kits and have a friend with a die grinder so I am going to try the carved leg as well.
