Chet
I am in the process of making a couple of end tables for our family room and my wife came out to check on me/the tables. while standing there she brought up something that I hadn't really thought of at this point but it is definitely a valid concern. She mentioned that the four grand kids and at times their parents struggle with the concept of coasters. Keeping track of all the cans, bottles and cups during family get togethers can be like trying to herd cats. She was wondering and now has me wondering if there is a finish that will stand up well to the lack coasters and the moister of cups and cans being set directly on the surface. Preferably a water borne product.

Stobes21
Arm-r-seal has protected a couple of tables of mine from that exact thing very well.
wdwerker
Agualente by ML Campbell is a precatalysed acrylic waterbourne that I use. It's pretty tough stuff. Some dealers only sell it to pro shops.
Boatworks Today
IMO really any of the general finishes will work very well. Personally I'd choose the finish that will give the appearance you're looking for over the protective qualities of the occasional visitors. On those times a decorative placemat will remedy most concerns. Their finishes are pretty tough, but everything has it's limits. I have yet to find a finish that will stand up to blatant neglect... :-)
