Woody1
How do you know which species each wood is? I have a lot of different kinds of wood laying around but have no idea how to tell. Is there some sort of guide you can point me to?

Tpt life
Smell, color, density, pores, annular rings, ray flecks, and another trait or two that I am spacing on right now are good places to start. Experience is huge.
phinds
There is a wood anatomy subsection on my site, so in addition to 40,000 images of the most common woods, there is also information to show you how to ID wood. Here's a good starter synopses http://www.woodbarter.com/threads/wood-anatomy-an-introduction.18349/ :

Maybe I need to send him a sample No, that's one of those relatively obscure woods I don't bother with. My focus is on woods that are fairly readily available to the American woodworker and which have enough presence on the internet for me to be able to find a decent number of representative pics of the wood and a few a made objects using the wood.
