treeslayer
has anyone ever built a recurve bow that's children's size? twin grandkids 7 years old are showing interest and i would like to make each of them one, laminate strips, solid wood, what wood ect. i don't know where to start on this one as i have never made a bow before. it's just for kids target practice so it doesn't have to be top end if you know what i mean, thanks for the input
Eric.
I know nothing about bow making except that osage orange is supposed to be a great species for it. The trick will be finding a nice clear straight-grained piece since osage orange trees are really just big shrubs...twisted, knotty and awful. It'll be a cool project though. I don't hunt but I'd like to make a bow one day. Maybe right after the guitar. In like 40 years.
wtnhighlander
For a kids bow, you can use any reaonably flexible species. Hickory comes to mind. The simplest design would be formed from a single stick. I understand that shaping to final form shoukd be done with abraders, rather than blades, to reduce the chances of a nick that might result in a fracture. ..Kev
Give this guy a shout. He's a personal friend of mine that teaches how to build them so will be able to answer all your questions.http://www.brisky-bows.com/I built the shave horse in my avatar for him. Mention that and he'll know who you're talking about. Edited November 20, 2015 by TIODS
Brendon_t
I don't normally outsource but I would stop by archerytalk.com there is a big population there that make their own stick bows, just don't go into Mutantville or Anything and Everything genpop.. Crazy over there.
