Novice to build sitting bench from beams

Recommended Posts

Well, I got back to the slab today (for coat hooks above the beam bench.)  Ready to stain it (I gave up on matching a dye, will use Van Dyke Brown Glaze - as a stain - to match the bench and interior structure.)

I thought about chamfering the edges of the slab to avoid the sharp corners, and "realized" (or incorrectly assumed) that I would expose end grain on the two lateral edges, which would be highlighted from the stain they would soak up.  So I decided to cut a wave into each lateral edge and enhance it with the chamfered edge, which would presumably pick up more stain.  Just to be sure I tried it out on a test block:

It didn't really work.  It almost did the opposite!  The edges where I sanded a chamfer do not really stand out except against the end grain.
