Popular Post Jfitz
I'm not a big fan of yard sales, even ones marked "estate sales" - usually they're just euphemisms for "junk sales". Our neighbor had a yard sale this past weekend and sent out a blast via Facebook to everyone. Now , they've only been in the house a few years, and have very young children, so I figured it would be mostly old clothing kids toys and books. I took a look at the FB pictures, and one item in particular caught my eye - so I made sure to stop in as I was heading out for the day. Not sure of the year - judging by the box it's not THAT old .... but an in-the-box No 80 cabinet scraper. Some light surface rust on the sole but no pitting, and some rust on the blade where a rubber cover protected the top edge. All in all, in OK shape. My neighbor's father was helping out and had a few items from his retired neighbor to sell, so for $15 I grabbed it. I plan to spend some time one night this week to clean it up.
Pondhockey
Nice find!! I've been looking for a #80 cabinet scraper; I'm very envious. Please give us an update when you get it rehabbed!
TerryMcK
Yes it looks recent(ish) as there is a barcode on the box. Good find.

Chet
That is a nice find. Unfortunately around here stuff like that shows up way over priced and people that just collect suck it up. I finally ended up buying the Veritas cabinet scraper.
Jfitz
Spent some time on it today. The sole came out ok but one side has an a hollow - figure it won't affect it too much. Forgot how much I hate rehabbing irons from scratch but I went through the normal progression of diamond stone, 1000, 4000, 8000 for both back and bevel. Finished with a quick roll of the burr and gave it a whirl. Not bad - I'm going to play around with different approaches to the burr to see what I like best. Not bad for a yard sale find.

Coop
Really neat find. Looks like 100% of the Japanning is still intact. @Ronn W, did you end up getting both in Amana?
Ronn W
I got a Veritas version of the #80 at Amana.
MattF
I just picked up a blade (Hock) for my No 80 last week when I was at Craftsman's Studio. This was given to me by my dad, it was originally my Great Grandfather's. Its a fun tool.
