Popular Post difalkner
I was given a sketch and asked to build a replacement for this trophy for a General at the base. I think he just wants to refresh the look of the trophy, change some info on plates, etc. While it is some really pretty Walnut about 90% of it will be covered with engraved plates - ugh! But it's finished and they can do with it what they want, I guess. The base is 17" square, the next level is 15 1/2" square, and the top 2" section on which the cup locates is 10" square. The one critical dimension I was given is that it has to be 21 1/2" tall to the top of the cup. Everything is just setting in place, nothing fastened down in the photos. The missiles were taken from the old trophy and the cup is new. Original trophy - New trophy - Enjoy! David

Chestnut
Nice i like it. Yeah the walnut will get covered up but I feel like we as woodworkers put a lot of nice wood in locations not usually seen.

difalkner
Thanks, Guys! No sir, the General is at BAFB, a SAC base, but he got the trophy years ago at another base and has been carrying it around with him for a while. There are likely missiles at BAFB but that's not the main focus. David
wdwerker
Looks like they've got 40+ B-52's. That base has been around since the 1930's according to Wikipedia.
wtnhighlander
B52s are awesome aircraft. Look up "Flight of the Old Dog" by Dale Brown for a really interesting adventure focussed around a B52.

I've lived here since the early 60's and I can't recall a day that I haven't seen at least one in the air, sometimes a dozen or more in a day. And it's a large base; it's been a while since I looked but I think it's somewhere in the vicinity of about 21,000 acres and employs about 10,000 (at least it used to be that many, not sure now). wdwerker
Many years ago I was putting a roof on a little room addition I built, it was near Dobbins Air Force Base & the Lockheed plant in Marietta Ga. All of a sudden the entire yard was in a deep shadow. A C5- B with its new wings was coming in for a landing and I was under the flight path. I had tuned out the C-130's coming and going (those are built there as well) but to look up and see nothing but the belly of a plane was stunning.

Likewise, I have looked up to some stunning bellies over the years, but they weren't airplanes. Awesome work "D" man -Ace-
