Steve B Anderson
I took the plunge and ordered a 8 x3 DMC extra fine diamond steel plate. I don’t use hand tool All that often except when I’m fitting tenons then the shoulder plan, 1/4” and 1/2” chisel’s get used a lot. I may eventually get some courser grits but for now just being able to quickly dress up the tools as I use them will be a big help.
Chip Sawdust
8x3 would be like driving down a super highway! I'm used to narrow dirt roads

Coop
I guess I missed this since my name wasn’t mentioned in vain as I’m accustomed, nor should it be mentioned in a sharpening course. In my experience, the 3” x 8” that I have leaves plenty of room for all of my plane blades.

I received my stone today and I love this thing. I sharpened my 1/8”, 1/4” and 1/2” chisels with it tonight. The 8” length is just right using the MKII honing guide. I haven’t put my plan iron on it yet but I can already tell that the 3” width of this plate will work just fine. I highly recommend this diamond plate. Chip Sawdust
That sounds awesome Steve, I'm a bit jealous it would be nice to have one that size for sure.
Popular Post Steve B Anderson
This is an up date on the 1200 grit DMT diamond plate. I found the scratch pattern to be a little rougher then I expected compared to the wet/dry paper. The plate does put a nice edge on the blade and removes material much faster then the paper but does not produce the mirror finish that the paper does, not sure why? I have been reading that most go beyond the 1200 grit to 6000 and 8000 grit then use a leather strop with extra fine compound to finish. I looked at the water stones and flattening plate but the cost (Around $300 for a quality 6000, 8000 and flattering plate) is prohibitive at this time. So I splurged for a leather bench strop and honing compound for $30 and what a difference a strop makes. Just a few strokes across the strop and wow, my tools are shaving like razor blades. I am still planning on getting the 6000 and 8000 water stones but wanted to relay on how much difference the strop made when just honing up to the 1200 grit plate.
RichardA
I'm glad it's doing what it's supposed to do for you Steve.
Byrdie
On the water stones, don't forget to consider combo stones. For similar money you can get the effectiveness of 2 stones. At the very least it's a good entry point.
