Popular Post treeslayer
ok, so a quick and easy one page build, @Coop and @Bmac had asked how they were built so here goes. here's the pattern i use you can see about 11" long glue up the blanks and trace the side profile and cut on the band saw then trace and cut the top profile the rest is just a belt and disc sander after cutting some of the waste off on the bandsaw, over to the oscillating spindle sander then on to my ROS clamped in my vise upside down for final finishing, a little hand sanding to finer grits then a couple of coats of mineral oil and done, really easy and quick project that make great gifts and any highly figured wood scraps work great for the handle because its just bandsaw and sanders so no chip out to worry about, they can also be made out of a solid block if you want, the width on these is 1 3/4" but that can vary to suit the woos you have. any questions and comments are welcome as usual, thanks for looking

Coop
Those are really neat Dave! Thanks for sharing. If the cryogenic hardening that my band saw blade gets tonight doesn’t affect it, I will try some of these!
curlyoak
I like the way they look. And I like the laminations with figure. Is this a kitchen tool?

Dave, I didn’t get this many ohhh’s and ahhh’s when I bought her a new car last year. Folks, it’s hard to believe but they look prettier in person than the picture shows! Thanks Jan and Dave!
Coop
Dave, hold my hand just a little longer! Is the longer piece 3/4” thick?

Probably closer to 7/8” Coop, thanks for the compliment, I do like to build them, I should have sent you the patterns I use with them but I’ve seen your talent and I’m sure you can figure it out, great gifts, quick build, not much wood all a plus in my book, glad Sharon likes them ! 1
legenddc
@treeslayer Love this project. About how thick would you guess the spatula-type part is? I glued up a few blanks the other night. Hoping I can get 3 good ones out of them before Mother's Day.

I try to keep them about 1/4” thick off the bandsaw so they end up a little less than that, width is 1 3/4” for the wide ones I make and 1 1/2” for the narrow ones but that depends on the wood I’m using, would love to see some pictures of yours when they are done.
legenddc
Thanks. Here’s my first attempt with some mineral spirits thrown on. I mistakenly cut the front of the handle when I meant to cut the back. Not done sanding it yet, it feels pretty good in your hand despite it looking like a lumpy potato. Looking back at yours it seems you bring the handle it quite a bit more and curve it a lot nicer. Perhaps that's makes it look longer. I'll try to salvage this one a little more but I do have 6 more blanks left.
Popular Post treeslayer
Some final contouring and sanding and you’re on your way to some great gifts, just beware they are addictive
legenddc
Thanks again for all the advice and pictures. I think I can save that one looking at your additional photos. I have a few curly maple and walnut ones glued up that I'll do last. Hoping those turn out really well!
Coop
They are indeed addictive. Thanks to Dave! In between projects, it’s make spurtles time. And when I give them away the ladies always say, thank you very much for the ......? I remind them they are Spurtles!

Popular Post legenddc
These made my wife a very happy mother this morning. She said it was the nicest thing I ever made so either she really liked it or the rest of the stuff I’ve made are crap… Once I made a longer one and rough cut the handle at 45s in the bandsaw shaping went much quicker and nicer. Figured I might as well finish up the stumpy one too. 4
