I mis-spoke the sled is more like 15+ inches from the fence.  I would say you could "safely" cut 16 inches.  I have a SawStop PCS and I use the fixture below to rest the sled on to start the cut.  It keeps it from tipping at the beginning.  I got the idea from @gee-dub.

I like the idea. gee-dub has so many of them! Unfortunately my old delta unisaw fence has no gap between the fence rail and the table. No cigar.

I really need to make one of those in feed supports. I"m amazed at how dust free your saw looks. That gap between the rail on my saw is always filled with saw dust.

Yea, I am a goofball, I clean my shop at the end of the session every day.

That's  smart and makes you intelligent and me a goofball... Though I'm probably guilty of that for many reasons not just because there is sawdust on my equipment.
