Popular Post wtnhighlander
I found some of the parts for this box while rummaging around the garage. I started it several years ago, early in my woodworking learning curve. I think I shelved it because I ran out of cherry for the corner moldings, and forgot to get back to it, since it was just an experiement / skill builder, with no intended purpose. Fast-forward to 2022, and I found myself with no immediate project, so out came the box. I decided to try some hand-carve texturing, which adds a nice rustic flair, IMO. The box is white pine, the moldings and handle are cherry, and the lid is a spalted mystery pallet wood. The box was treated with a sodium hydroxide (lye) solution to darken it. The lid and handle were also treated, but with a much weaker solution to retain good contrast in the spalting. The result is that the handle is a much lighter red. Finish is Minwax wipe-on "Tung Oil Finish". Sort of rustic, sort of random, but a lot of fun to make. Approximately 8" x 6" x 5". Handy size for EDC dump at day's end.

Chet
Projects that start out with no intended purpose can be the most fun at times. This one has some fun details. Looks like something you might of found in a frontier woodsman's cabin.
Coop
Dang, at first glance, I thought the edges were wrapped in leather. That’s cool!
