Popular Post Tom King
I'll be needing to cut sheets of 1/8" and 1/4" steel for a topsoil screen I'll be building. I have a cutting torch, but it doesn't do a nice clean edge. Neither does a plasma cutter. I also need to cut the old welded on edge on the tractor bucket, and would like a cleaner cut than the cutting torch will do, and it's too thick to use an abrasive blade. I started looking, and found the Milwaukee metal cutting circular saw. Circular saw operation is well ingrained in my hands, so I looked for youtube videos: That looks like exactly what would suit me, so I checked prices, and found them for 3 or 400 bucks. I decided to check Craigslist for some slim chance of getting a used one, and found this ad: https://raleigh.craigslist.org/tls/d/wake-forest-millwalkee-metal-cutting-saw/7563512597.html It's about an hour and a half away, and no way can I go having to stay here to look after my Mom. But I still called the seller to ask if he was by any chance heading up towards Lake Gaston any time in the future, not thinking there would be much chance, but why not ask. Turns out he's coming to the Lake tomorrow to attend a wedding. I asked him where, and told him where we live. He said he wasn't familiar with the area but said it was at 313 Millstone Rd., Henrico. I texted back that it must be close enough for me to meet him while I GoogleEarthed the address. About that time he texted back that his GPS said I was 7 minutes away. I had just seen the location on GE, and texted back that time must be walking distance. There are about 35 to 40 multimillion dollar lakes houses that have to drive right past our house on the dead end road that splits our property to get to their house. It's one of them. He's going to drop it off at my shop at 10 in the morning. Disclaimer: All my close friends know to not go up against me in a contest of either skill or luck.
Coop
Tom, how does this differ from a regular circ saw with a metal cutting blade? Only thing I could think of is the dust guard and all metal construction. Kudos on your find! Worked out almost as good as if Amazon was delivering it to ya! wtnhighlander
Metal cutting saws are built so as to better protect the motor and drivetrain from damaging metal chips. They also make a very clean cut, I've used one on 1/4" thick steel.
Tom King
I don't know any details, but I did watch several other videos, and was more impressed with each one. The lake has over 350 miles of shoreline.
Popular Post Tom King
It's not "like new". It is new. The only sign it had been handled is the twist tie was off the cord. The outside of the case is a little faded on one side, but there are no chips in it, the blade shows no sign of touching anything, and it runs smoothly like you would expect for a Milwaukee industrial tool. We were both in a hurry, so no discussion about it. The seller was driving a brand new F150 hybrid, and dressed for a formal wedding, so I don't think he stole it. Easiest CL transaction ever. 5
curlyoak
Can a metal cutting circular saw be used to cut wood? If so should one expect a different experience or result? Does the saw have more power? Thanks...
Mark J
The gods wanted you to have this saw.
Tom King
I have plenty of circular saws to cut wood. I'll post a picture one day when I can line them all up. I think it's 15 amps, which is the same as most of my wood cutters. The blade is noticeably wider than wood cutting blades.
wtnhighlander
I believe the tooth design of metal cutting blades also incorporates 'depth-limiting' humps of the back of each tooth, to prevent taking too big of a bite. I wouldn't use the same blade for wood.
Tom King
Here's the blade. It just looks like a low rake, thick ATB blade. Before I contacted the guy, I was expecting the blade to be messed up, and expected the blade to cost $150, which would negate the benefit of buying that saw. Google showed that these blades go for about 40 bucks, so I thought it would be worth a try. Turns out the blade in the saw has never touched anything. https://www.coastaltool.com/products/milwaukee-48-40-4515-8-metal-cutting-circular-saw-blade?gclid=CjwKCAiAhKycBhAQEiwAgf19eqybrZZYkaDHBs-489fouvZR0OTAJQr_hI8h6sOLf1090JaCeppfQBoCIcEQAvD_BwE Here's another video:

The metal cutting saws are also lower RPM than the wood cutting circular saws. I have an M18 metal cutting saw and it is truly a wonderful thing. I've cut up to 1/2" thick steel with it, which is way more than it's rated for. That was slow going, but it'll cut 1/4" no problem.
