Woods from around the globe project

Hey everyone,

I work for an international construction company that has completed projects all across the globe including central and South America, Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, India, the Middle East and Asia. I am trying to come up with a project that pays homage to the company’s international footprint by incorporating different woods from countries/regions in which we have worked. I’m looking for input/advice ranging from:

-what would be a good project piece that can incorporate several types of wood species. I intend for this to be something I can do in small to moderate batches (5-10) to hand out to coworkers.

-wood selection. How many species is too many?

-wood species recommendations based on the listed areas

-what suggestions would you have for species that would work well/be visually appealing without going overboard.

This is initial concept so I’m open to any ideas or suggestions. Thanks

A graphic inlay of a global map, highlighting countries affected, makes a nice commemorative plaque. Maybe too time consuming if you don't have a cnc router.

If you can obtain materials from each country, small boxes or picture frames are good for batching in a non-cnc shop.

The Wood Database can show a species growing range, but has no filter by country,so a little footwork is needed to select species to represent each country.

Great ideas on the world map and I would be all over it if I had a cnc router but unfortunately I do not. I’m leaning box at this time with each face representing a region of the world and adding multiple species on each face to incorporate more wood species. Thinking if I can lay out woods with similar color tones, it wont look too busy (hopefully). This gives me something to play around with.
