TimV Posted April 7, 2011 Report Share Posted April 7, 2011 I belong to a turner's group. Each month we have a president's challenge. This is where each member (if they want) turns a specified item and anonymously sets it on a table next to a number. Everyone at the meeting votes on their favorite by writing the number next to the project on a slip of paper. Whichever project has the most votes is declared the winner. Tonight's president's challenge is eggs (think Easter). I turned a solid egg ("hard boiled") egg but then a thought came to me to try a sunny side up egg. That's still an egg... Then I thought I need something to put the eggs on, a plate! I turned a plate. What else goes with eggs, bacon! But the bacon and eggs on the plate looked lonely. Hash browns and toast! Then I turned a couple of small sausages to round out the breakfast plate. Thanks to Jerry Stats for the pieces of yellowheart for the yoke and walnut and paduak for the bacon. And thanks to Vic, Jerry, Roger, Aaron, Mike and anyone else I forgot chatting last night for supplying the ideas to round out the breakfast plate. I couldn't have done it without you. The hard boiled egg is oak, bacon - walnut and paduak, sunny side up egg - yellowheart and hickory for the egg white, sausages - walnut, toast - poplar, hash browns and plate - sassafrass (hash browns are the green rough turning shavings). I used hickory on the egg white and it was white when I started but when I buffed it, it turned slightly pink. I'm afraid to bleach it now that the yoke is attached. Would taping off the yoke be sufficient to protect it? torch to toast? interesting thought, I might just try that, it would look very good. Crust? I stained the outer edge darker, are you thinking of a banding? Cup of coffee and saucer? I actually thought of a cup of orange juice, but I like the coffee and saucer idea. You could try a white wash (pickling stain or thinned white paint). Yes, I was thinking of some sort of banding, or at least controlled colour application. Better to be early than late! Anyway the meeting was last night, and I overwhelmingly won! Nearly everyone thought it was a great whismical idea. I noticed many of them saying that the sunny side up egg was still an egg. I'm glad I did it this way. I got a real kick out of making these. One of the members mentioned to me later that it is a great way to show that woodturning can lighthearted too. We had the president of the International Wood Collectors Association as a guest at our meeting and he wanted a very specific photo taken of it. And, our club president asked if I would be willing to put the breakfast plate out on display in libraries and public places where they have a rotating display case of members work. I said heck yea. Tim Fantastic Tim! I loved the piece. I must admit it is good to see some REAL wood turning. In the last few years all I've seen is Artsy Fartsy stuff without any real purpose other than that. I reckon you'll have wood worm queueing up for years just to have their photos taken on a real breakfast. Hell they won't even get greedy and eat it. Leaving it for the next generation to admire.
