maxomatic
I need to paint a new fireplace surround bright white, but I'm worried about durability (could get banged up by firewood). I've used enamel in the past for a tough white finish, but I want something tougher. Any thoughts?
duckkisser
if the fireplace is brick or stone then the tough texture should hold most paints prity well. might want to make shir you get get something that wont warp/bubble/run from the heat. arco21
I personally always try to put some sort of clear coat over white paint, otherwise it seems to get too dingy. I wouldn't put anything like a polyurethane on it though because of the yellowing that you will get. The hard part I can imagine would be what duckkisser mentioned of finding something that won't be hurt by the heat, but maybe where you're painting doesn't get too hot? dcustoms
Minwax Polycrylic works really well over the top of waterbased paints. That is what we spray over any painted wood work hope that helps
maxomatic
Thanks everyone... I should have been more specific, the surround is wood. It's in a spot where it won't get very hot. I think I'll try the polyacrylic...
chicks82
I am a huge fan of Kelly Moore's DuraPoxy. It is tough as nails when it's fully cured. I have finished kitchens with and many mantels. All still look great.
BenMinshall
I put Minwax Polycrylic over all of the white painted stair railings and handrails in my house and it has held up very well.
AceHoleInOne
If you have the ability to spray. General Finishes ("GF") has a product called Pigmented Poly in white. For even extra protection, you could always topcoat that with GF, high performance -Ace-
