Fxguy
As the topic says, tonight I was planing some 4/4 maple with the delta planer on a board about 8" wide when I noticed a line/ridge running the whole length of the board. It's noticeable when looking at an angle but not straight on. What could cause this? My thought is a chip in the blade but cut some maple earlier and didn't have the problem. It's late so I'll post some pics tomorrow. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
..Kev
The blades would be my first look.
wdwerker
Check your feed rollers as well. If something got imbedded or stuck on the surface maybe?
Fxguy
Turns out it was the blades, fortunately they are reversible and the reverse side is still new. What could cause the blades to get nicked like that? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
..Kev
Glad it worked out for you. As for what caused the nick, could have been lots of things from something in/on the wood to the blade had simply had enough..
RichardA
Is it a dw735? If so the OEM blades are far from the best. Search for HSS blades, I know that infinity tools carries them, and there are a couple of other places, that have HSS blades cheaper then Infinity! Coop
When I had a Delta, a small piece of wood somehow got trapped under the blade causing a pretty good nick in the wood. I removed the bar that holds the blade down and removed the chip but also had to replace the bar with a new one as it was no longer flat. Luckily a local shop had them in stock. Glad yours was only a nick in the blade.
mikem
The nick was likely caused by a piece of metal embedded in the wood, or even a small rock/pebble. I learned the hard way to never set my rough stock flat on the floor, as I had the same happen with my planer. The knives are so thin on lunch box planers, it really doesn't take much to get a nick in them, alas.
Dave H
when this happens I just send the piece through again in a different location the line disappears. Blades aren't cheap get your monies worth out of them. I save the blades once they've are to the replacement point, I'll take the new ones out for the old ones when I'm needing to plane some rough questionable lumber. wtnhighlander
Even a hard knot will chip some OEM blades!
