Popular Post Rick N
This is the blanket chest I finally finished that took a few months. I received a whole bunch of oak and walnut a few years ago and I finally ran out of walnut. This piece was made from 2 large slabs of oak that were not in good enough condition to use as is. The oak wouldn't match anything in my house so I decided to stain it. The stain was Java from general finishes and I put high performance satin over it using the HVLP for the first time. Mortise and tenon joints and the top is a solid oak glue up with breadboard ends. I used the domino to breadboard the ends by gluing in the middle one and keeping the two sides loose. I drilled a hole in the domino and elongated it so that it could move with pins I made on a hand drill "lathe" The first one I did had so much of a gap and I couldn't get the two sides flat with end grain. I tried hand planes, sanding and the piece was too big to use my table saw. So I decided to put on a edge guide and circular saw the whole thing off and restart. It came out great the second time. All the bottom pieces are curved and the legs are tapered. There was a lot of first time methods on this project. The top piece I messed up on because I forgot to actually cut the depth and finished it before I realized it was about 4-5 inches to big. So the back and front have too much overhang. Oh well. Won't make that mistake again. Design was a mix of images I found on Google. Thanks for reading
Eric.
Nice job man! You made red oak look about as good as red oak can look. I love the design, too. Classy. Well done.

bradseubert
Great job. I'm normally not a fan of the super dark stain but it looks great on this piece. I might have to try it out in the future. I have a bunch of red oak I got for free.
