I recently purchased some used tools from a craigslist ad. When i met the guy in person, he explained that he was a family friend helping to sell the deceased woodworkers tools. The collection was outstanding, however the friend was on his 9th month of meeting people after work and was trying to give me all of this extra free stuff because i was "someone who gets it". On top of that, it was pretty much a hoarders paradise. I have had two family friends parents pass away and helped with the tool sorting / garage sale situations. Its not fun or easy or lucrative. Do you have a plan for your tools when time is up?

It is my great hope that my son will put them in his shop and not on craigslist.  He's eight months old so he hasn't told me yet whether or not he'll be interested.  If he's not, I'll come back as a friendly ghost and break all his IKEA.

I have three sons. I could certainly see one of them wanting the tools. The other two have little interest at this point. But I came to the hobby later, so I hold out hope that it will be a huge battle over my tools for their shops rather than CL

My grandfather had 5 daughters. His hand tools and tool cabinets wound up prized features of their homes. And that's still better than CL.

I hope that when I go, the boys (son & son in law) divide up what they want of my tools and have a "wood workers yard sale" and get all the money they can out of the rest. I only have about $4000 or $5000 worth of tools anyway and I'm spending what they think is their "inheritance" RIGHT NOW! :)

No kids here , hope my nephew wants them , I need to put together a list of prices in case he doesn't want them and sells em . At least he'll know they aren't cheap tools and give them away so somebody can come here and gloat . ;)

I'm with woodsap, if they like the idea of keeping them then that's great but I would not want them to do it through pressure. If they did not want them I'm hopeful they would go to someone like you Spencer who would make the best of them.

I like to keep the special bits, but being a fourth generation joiner there is a limit to what can be horded.

Not me.  My son WILL be a woodworker and he WILL take all my tools or he WILL be completely cut out of the WILL. :D  Kidding of course.  But like Graham, I'm a fourth generation wood mangler, so chances are he'll be interested...it's in the blood.  Hope so anyway.

If my kids, or a member of the family want them, great!  I think what I would find more upsetting is if they say in a garage/basement getting rusty and hope that someday they get sold at a garage sale that someone will restore them, or worse getting tossed.  I would much prefer that if they don't want them, to either sell them or give them to a woodworker who will use them.
