jmaichel
I am going to build a Cornhole set, something I have been meaning to do for some time now. I know building one is very straight forward but I don't want to use 2x4's for the base. I would rather use a hardwood, even if its poplar. Anyone ever build a set using something other than 2x4 material for the base?
Eric.
Initial gut reaction: white oak. Strength to resist the impact when a drunk person falls on it. And rot-resistance for when a drunk person neglects to bring them inside and the morning air gets your cornhole all wet and glistening with dew. I love both playing and saying cornhole. I'm so mature.
jmaichel
White oak might not be a bad option, The only reason I was thinking poplar is because I was going to paint them. Have you made a set Eric?
Tpt life
They sit in grass. Epoxy or resin coat the under frame and it just about does not matter what you use. Also, white oak takes paint like a champ.
jmaichel
I have seen different methods of attaching the top to the base. I like the idea of using pocket hole screws instead of countersinking screws in the top and filling with wood putty. Any thoughts on methods of attachment? jmaichel
I don't have a Domino, if I did we would not be having this conversation.

jmaichel
You're not too far from me, c'mon up! I might have to but I think I am going to end up making a few sets. I will probably just keep it simple with pocket holes, poplar and birch plywood.

Freddie
I'm on a teak kick lately, so I'll say teak. If you get wasted and leave them outside, they'll be fine. If you leave them outside indefinitely, they'll still be fine. The striated grain patterns in teak are also quite killer if I may add. Cochese
I built the set featured in Wood last year. You're most likely going to paint the top, so go with poplar and paint the whole thing.
Guest
Maybe its just a Chicago thing, around here we call that game Bags. Corn Hole is what happens to you in prison.... I don't have anything to add other than that.

I don't have anything to add other than that. Not just in Chicago. I live in Washington state and call it game bags as well. As for the prison thing, I'll take your word for it
Guest
Instead of painting the tops with rival sports teams, like most people do, you should paint a hand plane on one and a table saw on the other. Only you will get the joke.
Tpt life
Molding plane and Router? LN #7 and PM aircraft carrier? Lots of good options.
Freddie
Put a Pm2000 on one and a Grizzly G0690 on the other. That seems to be the trend of what people wish for and end up getting.

I don't have anything to add other than that. I have some friends who live in Chicago...they came to visit a few years ago and brought their "bags" set with them. By the time they left they were calling it cornhole. Because you can't beat that name for...well, just about anything. My buddy and I went undefeated that weekend. The name of our team? Corn Kids. Unstoppable.
Llama
I saw the title of the thread, and saw Freddie was the last to comment. I thought the worst. Good thing Woodsap beat us to the punchline!
Freddie
We normal people call it tailgate toss. Once I caught wind of this game, it became the greatest summer beer drinking bbq backyard game ever! Well, you also can't beat the ultimate rivalry of a house rules volleyball game. Autorotate
Hi James If you ever find yourself playing at night I recommend these battery operated Led lights they work great. http://www.amazon.com/AJJ-Cornhole-Night-Light-Set/dp/B002MFNWXS

Happen to be very awesome at that game! Also a good one, usually results in a lot of passing out, blacking out etc. if done right haha. jmaichel
I remember seeing the set in Wood Magazine, I will have to dig up that issue. I am originally from Chicago and when I was home for the holidays my dad showed me his "bags" set. I just used the term Cornhole because it is more universally accepted plus like Eric said, it is just fun to say. No rival teams for me, just the 1914 Cubs Logo and colors in celebration of the Wrigley Field Centennial. I wouldn't dare put a Cardinals logo on one of the boards.

Yeah it would be pretty awkward to use a rival team that you've beat, what, ONCE in the last 100 years?
