..Kev
No sanding involved in what I suggested. Just remove the top from the hinges, dampen with water, and clamp flat for the night.

Coop
Vinny, Happy Anniversary! Great looking box. Did you put a big diamond in it for the lady
wouldwurker
Ha! Thanks. Been married 8 years..I think my diamond days are over Actually, last night I found myself rushing to finish and sacrificing quality as a result. Breadboards are still too proud for my tastes, as well as the amount of 'hangoff' in the fron and sides. Plus it needs feet, dividers, and I don't dare want to add the velvet lining until all the finish has been applied! Didn't make much progress flattening the board last night, but the rare earth magnet in the corners approach might just work

wdwerker
K&J magnetics has every size, shape and strength magnet you could possibly want. They even have technical data showing exactly how much pull strength in different applications for each size.

Dewald Swanepoel
Box side hinge cuts complete. Ok. Not great, not terrible either though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk OK then. Dumb question time; What is that tool on top of the chisel?
Countryside Workshop
OK then. Dumb question time; What is that tool on top of the chisel? Marking guage
Dewald Swanepoel
Marking guage Aha, thanks. That shows how much out of the loop I am. The last time I've used a marking gauge it was a wooden block around a wooden shaft
wouldwurker
Ah. Since then they've made huge strides in design... like the inherent ability to constantly roll off your bench. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
wouldwurker
Ordered a few different strength magnets from K&J (thanks wdwerker). What a cool site. Everything from .02lb to 1000lb pull strength! Maybe I'll ditch traditional joinery altogether and just embed high-strength magnets in all my projects. On a related accessory topic, the Brusso 302 hinges are nice, but $32? What am I missing here? Why so pricey?
wdwerker
They approach being jewelry quality, made in USA and little to no play in the hinge.

wdwerker
That gloss really makes the grain pop ! Looks great. If you read Brusso's website they use aircraft grade precision. Their info on piloting for screws and installing screws is worth reading.

Popular Post wouldwurker
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention and thank my local Woodcraft guy for, out of pure generosity, giving me, from his personal stash, that birds eye maple. Even resawed and jointed it for me....on the condition that I show him the final product. At the end of the day, it's the reason I keep going back to the brick and mortar instead of ordering off Amazon.

wouldwurker
Lots of downtime between finishing/drying. Threw together a little divider with some scrap birds eye and walnut Try to imagine the bottom in red velvet.
