Coop
Vinny, Rockler has a "velvet" that is sort of in powder form that is applied thru a shaker type dispenser. You apply their special glue that is the same color as the velvet and then apply the velvet dust over the glue. The first time I used it, I didn't apply enough glue and it turned out splotchy, but had good success the next two times. The box looks great. wouldwurker
Thanks. I already bought a roll of their self-adhesive velvet. Off the top of my head, whatever the savings is on that glue/powder stuff you mentioned doesn't sound worth it. No?
Coop
If I had it to do over, I probably wouldn't have bought it as I'm limited to using only that color. The advantage is that you can cover only the area you want by taping the rest of the box/drawer off. I purchased it because my application was an after thought and the dividers were already in the tray that I made.
wouldwurker
The real bonus with the self adhesive velvet is that you can use the scraps on your lapels. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Countryside Workshop
The powder stuff is not velvet, it is called flocking and their isn't much savings if any. A bag of flocking costs about $14 and a glue gam costs about $14. But it does cover more sqft. It isn't as easy to apply though and takes up to 72 hours to fully cure before you can remove all the extra flocking.
wtnhighlander
Flocking is a lot easier to get into small nooks and crannies, though. I've never had much success applying sheet coverings in smallish spaces. Always ends up wrinkled, or with adhesive all over the show side. BTW, there are several online sellers of the flocking kits that are likely to be less expensive than Rockler.
Rapid Roger
A few years ago, I made a small box for "home communion" group at our church. I lined the whole interior with "stick-on felt" that I bought at Hobby Lobby here locally. It was quit a job cutting all the various pieces and getting them in place but, I thought it looked good when it was done. And yes, I did get the bare edge at the front covered before it left the shop. I've never tried the "flocking" approach but I did consider it before I went to the stick-on felt. I thought it would be harder to get glue into all the small areas and then there was getting the flocking into the corners too. Rog
wouldwurker
Wow. Now THAT looks like a job for flocking. Pretty box - love the molded bits inside. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
wtnhighlander
The flocking kit I have used includes an oil-based paint as the 'glue'. It is color-matched to the fibers, and is pretty easy to apply with a brush. Runs and drips aren't a big deal, since fibers cover them quite well. I got the stuff from http://www.flockit.com. wouldwurker
Thought I'd make my own knob, so I chucked up some walnut in the power drill and had at it with a modeler's rasp and sandpaper. Nice thing about acquiring old power drills for 15 bucks here and there....of course, still gave the motor a break every 20 seconds. wouldwurker
Admittedly, it looks more like a walnut q-tip. May have to go back to the drawing board Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Countryside Workshop
What finish is it? Arm-r-seal?
wouldwurker
What finish is it? Arm-r-seal? Arm-r-seal gloss on the outside, dewaxed shellac and vanilla oil on the inside and partition pieces (to prevent in the smelly box fume off) Learned a lesson in finishing very thin pieces (the top). There wasn't enough mass to hold it still on the painters pyramids, so it slid around just a bit when I flipped it to finish the other side. As such, you can see little swirl marks on the underside where the pyramid tips 'scratched' the wet finish. I actually tried the 75% naptha 25% finish trick for what I thought was my final coat. Dried quickly, but I thought it looked crappy...so I added another coat full strength. I'll rub out the whole thing in a month or so, when I'm confident it's fully cured.

In time, I'll add a few of these EXAMPLES ONLY (from a (gasp) store bought jewelry box. ) Now get out of my box! Ready for delivery. Tiods, can you make me a crate to ship this? It's going all the way to the bedroom. Thanks for watching, all the help, and building along with me. I'll take some pics with the nice camera and bump to showcase later. -VJ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
