Popular Post Denette
I've only ever turned a few Christmas ornaments prior to this, so this was way out of my wheelhouse. I turned about an 8-inch bowl out of a big ash blank. Here's the blank next to a 15" laptop for scale: It was an ordeal to get it trued up. I turned it on my father-in-law's harbor freight lathe, and it about vibrated to pieces. We had to knock down the octagonal edges with a hand plane. That said, for a first large project, it turned out very well! I'm going to cut a spiral cut into it so that it can be used by my mother as a yarn-dispensing bowl (it's a Christmas present), and I'm going to target a few worm holes with the spiral - kill two birds with one stone. The bottom of the bowl was intentionally left broad and thick, along with a gently rounded interior to let the yarn spin freely while not causing the bowl to tip. I'll post more pictures once the yarn modification is made!
davewyo
Nice! That bowl has some nice grain patterns. I looked it up on the Nets and learned that yarn bowls with that spiral cut-out are a "thing". Who knew? You learn something new every day...
wtnhighlander
Nice bowl! Deep, and very smooth, I'd call it a succesful first!
Denette
Nice bowl! Deep, and very smooth, I'd call it a succesful first! Thanks! What's more, my father-in-law didn't have a proper dovetail chuck, just a plate that you screw to the workpiece. I only had it attached from one side for the whole time I worked on it! Bankstick
Nice piece of wood! What are you going to use for the finish?
Denette
Nice piece of wood! What are you going to use for the finish? I just used raw beeswax on it while it was still on the lathe. Looks good and smells good!

Popular Post Denette
It is finished! Took forever to sand the interior of the spiral, but it looks pretty good I think. https://vimeo.com/195120738
wtnhighlander
Nice! What did you cut the spiral with, a fret / coping saw?

Denette
Nice! What did you cut the spiral with, a fret / coping saw? Yep! Another first with this project. I bought the hokey $5 Irwin coping saw at Lowe's, and while adjusting it was no fun, it was really easy to get the hang of. Then I sanded the spiral by hand, working through the grits on up to 2000 because, hey, I had the paper, so why not? Then I waxed the spiral with more beeswax. It's finished now and works great!
