Popular Post collinb
Thought I would take some time and at least start the learning/practice. I was able to get shavings from one side but not the full width. More practice another day. prov163
You won't get full width shavings from a card scraper because you camber it during use. You've got a great start there.
Coop
Those are some respectable shavings!
Jfitz
Nicely done! The first time you can get it "just right" with a card scraper is a great feeling. Such a simple tool - but so useful.
collinb
Those are some respectable shavings! Perhaps I am pushing learning/results a little too hard. Ng makes it look so easy ... woodbutcher74
Have been using scrapers for a while but never had a burnisher. Well I have a Veritas Variable burnisher but was never really happy with the results. Was going to order one when it hit me. I had a cheap set of knives that came with a steel to sharpen them. What is a burnisher but a hardened steel rod same as a steel. Went and dug it out and tried it out. Works great. So if you come across an old knife set with a steel give it a try and save your bucks for some other toy. Sorry to hijack collinb, looks like your doing pretty good with your method. Tom King
Looks like you're close. This is one of those things where the hardest thing to overcome is reluctance. If you get to the point where you are pressing too hard, or going too fast, in one shot, let us know. I do it with one hand on the "burnisher". It always scares me when I see someone trying to use two hands.
mat60
Glad you started this thread Collinb. Looks like your off to a good start and I am interested in getting into using card scrapers. The other night I had this idea Id sharpen my paint scraper and what was funny is it worked ok. LOL
