Popular Post difalkner
This is for an administrative assistant in a local school and I have been wanting to use some of my veneers so this looked like a good project for that. Madrone Burl on Maple, 12" x 3" by 7/8" thick, finished in Nitrocellulose lacquer. I didn't try to fill the pores - one coat of sealer, one coat of semi-gloss. Front and outside profile designed in CorelDraw, exported to Fusion 360, engraved with 0.25" 60° Amana bit, profile cut with 0.25" Whiteside compression bit. Back designed in Carveco and engraved with the same 60° bit. Cut veneer to fit oversize Maple blank - Glued veneer with TB I and pressed in my veneer press - On the CNC - Madrone Burl veneer on Maple - I am very pleased at how clean this came out! This was one pass on the CNC. Back side - Enjoy! David

Gary Beasley
You can also use a vacuum bag, easier to pack away when not using.
difalkner
Yes, and I would love to have one but my vacuum pump isn't working. Neither was my old planer, hence the press. I guess I could've set the vacuum pump on the veneer to hold it down! I seriously need to rebuild that pump! David
Gary Beasley
I think some of the bags are made to use with a shop vac, but thats a hell of a lot of noise to put up with while the glue sets!
difalkner
I agree, Gary - lots of noise. That's one of the reasons I built the press even though my vacuum pump is very quiet. For small, flat items the press is great; just clamp it and leave it alone. I can even pick up the entire press complete with whatever I'm gluing and set it aside if I need to without disturbing the piece I'm gluing. Gary Beasley
The biggest advantage of the vacuum system is the fact that once everything is in place and vacuum pulled the pressure applied is extremely even, a major plus doing the bigger sheets. So you are right about the small stuff, clamp it and forget it.
